Why Leave the Gates of Big Canoe???

By kve | February 19, 2008

Truth be known I can be a recluse!!! Don’t get me wrong I love a good party and I’m at 90% of the Big Canoe sponsered events, but I rarely leave the gates. Why? It’s simple, I really don’t need to do it! Everything I need is in the gates. Let’s start with one of the biggest necessities, wine; IGA Express has it all, the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly! I prefer the Bad, AKA low end but tasty Trove in a box, but when my high- falutin’ friends roll into town, I have the option of spending $40 bucks for a bottle of Frogtown. By the way, I’m still waiting for some brave soul to write me a review on Frogtown because I did hear that it was an award winner!! OK there are other things besides wine, but I really do enjoy my glass of red wine. The IGA Express also carries everything you need from fresh biscuits in the morning to last minute frozen pizzas at night and gas to get you home! My favorite thing about the IGA Express is that I take my kids there in the afternoons for an ice cream and have no qualms about handing them a few bucks and sending them in there on their own. When I hear the creeky screened door open I know I’ll see 2 very happy kids with 2 very colorful ice-pops. I sit at the table on the patio reading the Smoke Signals while they load up on sugar.

There are a whole lot of other reasons not to leave the gates. Another favorite of mine is the Post Office! First of all it’s where you get your mail! Secondly it is a social gathering place. I rarely go to the PO without running into a friend. Then I check the Big Canoe Animal Rescue Board…just in case I need another pup!! After that I go to see what’s on the Garage Sale board! New car? Treadmill? Hot tub? You name it, they put it up for sale! If there aren’t any tread mills for sale I head over to the fitness center for a swim or a pilates class. If I really feel guilty or ambitious I can hike the Jeep Trail home. At this point I usually go back to work when I get home, but when I “retire” I have a long list of Big canoe activities that would get me in the center of social activity!! Some examples are; the Ridgerunners (Ladies club), Wildflower Bunch (garden club), There are a million book clubs, The Bocce Ball Club is very HOT!, Meeting friends at the Sconti for lunch is a lot of fun. You can write it off to your lot, (Or put it on the “Underhill’s” Bill!!)

Yes, there are times when you have to leave the gates, but what I love about Big Canoe is that I never feel bored. Take the Big Canoe Challenge and rent up here of a month. Share your feelings on my reclusive outlook! I look forward to your responses!!

You just listed all the reasons I want to move there..I have just found two rescue dogs here in Miami that I want but I can’t do anything until we move..I feel like standing out on the highway with a For Sale sign..I don’t see why everyone doesn’t love this house..all my friends do..I must bury St Joseph in my front yard to see if that works!!

You just listed all the reasons I want to move there. The only thing is..what do you do about medical emergencies?? I wish someone would fall in love with my house here in Miami..my friends all love it. I want more dogs and I can’t get them until we move. Maybe I will plant St. Joseph in my front yard..I hear it works!!! Mary Seamans

    Hi Mary -

Mountainside is our newest and closest hospital to Big Canoe now. It is located off of I-575 about 20-25 minutes away. Also, we have our own trained EMT staff available 24/7, and on the occasion that somone required truly urgent medical care, they were life-flighted to either Mountainside or to Northside Hospital (the major hospital group in Atlanta).
