Why Do You Want to Live in Big Canoe?

By djelliott999 | June 16, 2008

Suburban Sprawl

Recently, we had a client send us some pictures she had taken not far from her current home. It reminded me a lot of the intersection of Pleasant Hill Road and I-85 in metro Atlanta. Before we moved to the North Georgia community of Big Canoe, we lived about 5 miles from this intersection. Frankly, I don’t miss all the concrete and paving, but on occasion I miss all the conveniences of the burbs. It really is nice to be able to have all the shopping minutes away. Trust me when I say I love grabbing a Starbucks coffee or hitting the Barnes and Noble to pick up some new books. But everyone needs to get away from the concrete jungle once in awhile.

Today, we woke up and drove our kids to VBS (Vacation Bible School) which is a very popular non-denominational summer camp hosted by the Big Canoe Chapel. We pulled out of our street on Trout Lily Trail, and headed over the Lake Petit dam. Along the way, we saw at least a half dozen deer - many of which looked plump enough that we suspected they’d be bearing fawns soon. We also saw one wild turkey, but where there’s one, there are usually others close-by. There were also a handful of folks enjoying some trout fishing off the banks.

I’m not sure exactly how many kids turned out for VBS, but my unscientific estimate is - tons. There were children from Big Canoe as well as the nearby communities of Bent Tree, Cove Lake, and Jasper. All of the volunteers were adults from the local communities, and our kids had a blast.

And this is why I love living in the mountain community of Big Canoe. It truly is a community. My morning commute is all about counting deer and turkey, and if I’m really lucky, a black bear. I also enjoy driving over the dam and counting the bent rods of people cranking in rainbow trout. Also, there is always some community event going on. Whether it’s VBS, or Octoberfest, the Dekalb Symphony performing on the Big Canoe golf course, or Trunk or Treat, the community of Big Canoe is vibrant.

I too used to live in metro Atlanta. I first moved there in 1987 and loved it. But after 20 years, I began to long for the mountains. I know myself well enough, however, to know that I still enjoy the company of other people. The true community spirit of Big Canoe makes moving to the mountains feel more like home for me.

So maybe that’s partly why, when I first visited Big Canoe a few years ago, I fell in love. I think it happened somewhere between the main gate and the covered bridge. Today, I’m happy to say that this is now my home!

Last night was my first night to sleep here. I noticed that the temperature outside had dropped to about 72 so I turned the AC off and opened the windows above my bed so I could let the waterfall below lull me to sleep.

I think I may never leave.

    I am home!

If you are in Big Canoe, come see me at the new Black Bear Pub overlooking Lake Sconti. I’m your new bartender.

    See you soon.

    Tom

    Hi Tom -

    Glad you’re here!

You do know it’s customary for bartenders buy a round of drinks for real estate agents they’ve worked with? :)

    Karin,
You can post my lovely picture if you like. It is quite a site. We unfortunately are only a few blocks from the construction-which we hear all night long. There is something about that sound that is unsettling. I would rather be lulled by a waterfall.

Thanks Kathy!! You were the inspiration for this blog however I chose not to use your picture since you are planning on selling your home at some point! ;)

Waterfalls, deer & bear…oh, my!!! But no Kathy, YET!

I promise, Kathy, you won’t miss the constant construction of Hotlanta. We had another quiet, cool night here in Big Canoe ( I can say ‘we’ now). I highly recommend figuring out a way to make the move.

Dan, I look forward to meeting you Saturday night. The drinks will be flowing in your new Black Bear Pub!

Tom - We’ll try to make it over there to check out the new club! Look forward to meeting you as well. Maybe we can get you to do a guest blog about opening night at the new Big Canoe clubhouse?

Look for me in the pub tonight, Dan. I have a surprise for you.

Maybe you can start a blog post about the party tonight. I’ll be happy to add my 2 cents.
