Mushrooms are All Over Big Canoe!

Giant Mushrooms!

A Mushroom walks into a bar and the bartender says, “You need to get out of here. We don’t serve your type!”

And the mushroom says “But I’m really a Fun-gi!!!” Ba-dum-cha!

To all the mushroom hunters out there I have had a summer full of interesting fungi and they are still around here. We had crazy red, orange, and white mushrooms all overĀ our yard in Big Canoe. The trees had shelf mushrooms too! There was never a dull moment walking in the yard. YES, I believe there are Morels-a-plenty too, BUT please know that I am a real estate agent and not a “fungologist” or whatever they call experts who study mushrooms. I do not recommend eating any mushrooms unless you are 100% sure they are edible.

We saw a few this summer that looked like the dreaded Death Cap mushroom that is very toxic if eaten. Our pups were steered away from the innocent looking white umbrellas. One of my favorite fungal colonies that I came across this year was actually named “dog vomit” because it is grows across the ground and looks like it’s name. Luckily it doesn’t last long. Sorry I don’t have a picture of it but I wasn’t that inspired when I saw it!! It was just plain gross, but the kids got a kick out of it!

This summer we went for a walk and found the biggest mushrooms we’ve ever seen! Attached is a picture of the kids standing next to it. The giant toadstool lasted for about a week! Happy hunting!!!

Seeing those mushrooms pop up after the recent heavy rains is sort of cool, and many of them are gigantic (and beautiful) specimens. I think it’s smart to keep your animals from playing with them. Mushrooms are notorious for being difficult to ID correctly, and some of them are very toxic.

In a recent coincidence, I just read the following news story on MSNBC:

    Mushrooms poison ‘Horse Whisperer’ author

Yikes! Hope everything turns out OK.

Wow! I can’t believe how big these mushrooms are. I’m sorry I missed seeing them in person. Thanks for sharing the photo.
