Grocery Stores in Big Canoe, Part II
By Karin Elliott | March 22, 2008
This is the second part of a three part review on major grocery stores close to the Community of Big Canoe. Big Canoe is a gated mountain community located roughly 60 miles North of Atlanta. Big Canoe and its associated real estate is a bit off the beaten path, so our real estate clients often ask us where we go to for our grocery shopping.
Last night I talked about the Kroger on 515 in Jasper. To sum it up, it is nice for weekly shopping, gas prices are unbeatable, the Starbucks is too far out of range for the DM’s to worry about so the coffee is often mediocre. Tonight I will write about the Ingles grocery store on the corner of 53 and 515.
I like Ingles a lot becuse I don’t have to cross 515 to get there. Like Kroger, it has a deli, bakery, pharmacy and video rental. The produce section carries less than Kroger but is still very stocked and fresh. The meat and produce section is wonderful and they run some nice sales. One example is the time they had Boston Butts on sale for 88 cents per pound. (That makes for a happy Green Egg!) I have never been disappointed with any meats from Ingles. The aisles are wide, easy to read, not overstocked, and well organized. I have waited in line there more than at Kroger but the help is friendly.
I find that Ingles has a better toy, book, dvd, and magazine section than Kroger and Publix. I feel like I’m at Barnes and Noble in the book aisle. The wine selection is OK with all the popular brands at comparable prices to the other big stores. So, it’s a super place for last minute gifts for those who don’t like gift cards.
The only down sides I found at Ingalls is that you still have to sign up for a card to get the discount and unlike Kroger who allows a gas discount at the pump, Ingles makes you pre-pay for the gas discount.
