Wheel Bug and Yellow Jacket Fighting

Wheel Bug and Yellow Jacket Fighting

*Update 07/28/08 - Thank you all for your hilarious comments! We loved them all and had a tough time choosing! After much debating we decided to do it the old fashioned way-pick a name out of a hat! And the winning comment of the $25 gift certificate to the Last Catch in Jasper is:

“I guess there is a reason yellow means caution.”
Congratulations Mimi!!!!! We will email you shortly!

Here in the North Georgia mountains, we’re always on the lookout for anything interesting whether its real estate in Big Canoe or related to the wonderful setting in which we live.  The other day, I went out onto our back porch, and I witnessed a truly epic battle.  This battle was between two insects: a yellow-jacket and what we call a wheel bug.  Before I lose your interest, there’s a prize involved here, so read on.

Everyone knows what yellow-jackets are, but not everyone know what a wheel bug is.  Wheel bugs have a stabbing mouth-part and are pretty interesting little predatory insects.  For the record, these little guys are everywhere, most people have just never heard of them.  Regardless of the icky insect factor and the fact that both of these bugs can sting / bite, watching them go round and round was truly amazing. Needless to say the battle went on way longer than we ever thought it would.

I swear I could hear Jaques Cousteau saying in a very French accent  ”We must not interfere with the harsh neutrality of nature.”  The fight finally concluded as a draw with both parties limping away.  Notwithstanding the obvious real estate agent and lawyer jokes, we’ve  decided to have a contest based on the picture.  Anyone can comment or email us with a caption they think best describes the picture, and the prize is a $25 gift certificate to Last Catch Seafood restaurant in Jasper.  We’ll post the winner here on the blog Sunday evening (July 27th 2008), so be sure you submit your caption no later than Saturday night.

With all that said and done, start thinking.  The good news is that if there is only one caption comment then you win!!!! I can’t wait to see what you all come up with!!!

I didn’t know fights like this took place without Don King’s involvement.

Very funny Tom! Don King is a pretty smart guy….sanctioned bug fighting could be on the horizon. :)

Great comment Mimi! Hate to learn that lesson the hard way!

Hey Chuck, I cracked up with that comment, That was pretty much what they looked like.

Glad I had my shoes on when I found them out there, otherwise you’d see 2 more legs and 2 arms in the tangle! Hee Hee!
