Directions in Big Canoe - Which way do I go?

By Karin Elliott | December 23, 2007

Where Am I in Big Canoe?I can’t tell you how many agents call me up from the metro Atlanta area and ask about showing one of my listings. I generously offer to help guide them and often get promptly refused. By the time I forget about it I get a call from said agent and he/she has a million questions about directions in the Big Canoe Community, which I’m happy to answer. I continue on with whatever I’m doing, and the phone rings again, “I’m lost on a mountain in here and need to get back home quickly so I can feed my dog. At this point I panic over the dog and give them Big Canoe’s best kept secret: Look for the white arrows at the top of the street signs and they will point to the center of the Big Canoe Village. Needless to say it’s hard to sell a home when your clients are scared and lost!

As a new real estate agent 2 1/2 years ago I was thrown to the dogs and told to “go sell”. My Achille’s heel was not knowing the roads. Not being familiar with my territory put me at a disadvantage. OK, since it’s just you and me I’ll admit a very embarassig truth……I made up songs to get me where I needed to go. “Wake Robin to Mountain Mint, Mountain Mint to Trout Lily Trail” to the tune of Jingle Bells was as sacred as “Joy to the World” on Christmas Eve when I got where I needed to be! OK you don’t have to have a great voice, it’s only you, and you’re in Big Canoe where creativity is celebrated! I then studied the map like an algebra-trig book to memorize sections. All of the sections of Big Canoe have something in common; Trees, Water, Birds, Equestrian, etc. It helped me assimilate the 8,000 acres of Big Canoe real estate. Truth be known, if you look lost people usually stop and ask if you need a hand.

Keep these tips in mind if you are travelling to Big Canoe for the first time.  It’s a lot easier (and more effective) than clicking your heels 3 times and saying “There’s no place like home!!!”

1. Get a map from the Gate.  They are free, and they are also accurate.  If you just need directions on how to get to Big Canoe, check out our main site.

2. Remember the arrows always point to the center of Big Canoe.

3. Make a plan or a song to get to your destination so you don’t have to pull over to the side of the road.
