Big Weekend in the Big Canoe Community!
By kve | May 6, 2008

Hi Everyone,
Please pardon the lapse in my designing series. We had a super weekend here in Big Canoe with some happy house hunters. It was a whole lot of fun and I felt like writing about who is visiting. My future neighbors come to Big Canoe from all across the United States. The first group I worked with are looking to settle in to this beautiful mountain community all the way from Houston, Texas. Shelly has lived just about everywhere but her husband, Alex was born and raised in Houston. They are looking to experience the 4 season climate and to escape the 116 degree summers! One important factor as well was the safety of the neighborhood for their 3 children and the quality of the school systems. As an introduction to Big Canoe they rented a tree-topper and dined at Piazza and the Appalachia Grill. Thumbs up for both! The hilly roads were an all new experience coming from the flat-lands but I kept them away from any of the “double-diamond” roads. The Big Canoe map helped them get an idea of the community neighborhoods and price points. After looking in Dahlonega and other nearby communities, they seemed to fall in love with Big Canoe’s relaxed atmosphere and amazingly varied homes. They plan to come back for round two this summer! Can’t wait to see you guys again!
My next group was Valerie and Darren from Boca Raton. They came up to Big Canoe for a second visit to celebrate their anniversary and experience the green spring. Deerfield Cottage was the perfect rental for them because it was off the beaten path and very close to the base of Deer Run Ridge, a “Double Diamond” road for those who love curves. Arriving in a hot little sportscar I was inspired to rename Deer Run Ridge to Darren Run Ridge, because he couldn’t get enough of it. They are looking for a big home to accomodate large family gatherings and Darren’s various garage toys!! Valerie, a true entrepreneur, enjoys writing and is looking for a cozy and inspiring office. (I need that too because I am writing from my breakfast bar in the kitchen which only inspires me to clean!) They spent the weekend enjoying the grounds, taking the Tour of Homes and playing golf. They have a very good idea of the workings of Big Canoe and are avid readers of the Smoke Signals Online. I look forward to seeing them this summer!!
All in all the thing most people who come to Big Canoe like best is the diversity. The homes are as unique as the residents and the community speaks for itself. From the moment you pull into the gates and drive through what I call the emerald forest you know that you are in a whole other world.

I’m glad that everyone enjoyed themselves this past weekend. The weather was truly gorgeous. I forgot to give credit and thanks to Darren for the golf picture at the top of the blog so..thanks Darren! Darren, how about an update on what you liked/disliked about the golf course? I’d love to get some feedback from you on this.

Wish every day looked this perfect on the golf course! Makes you want to play hooky.

I golfed holes 1 through 9 at Choctaw - Being from South Florida, where our terrain is virtually flat, I found the rolling hills breath-taking. I was impressed by the tee pads at the golf range, which proved an exciting precursor to my 3pm tee time. The 1st hole included what I thought was the most dramatic drop I’d ever golfed yet, I was even more impressed by the 168 yard drive at the 9th tee; you’d think the hole was a mile below! The golf course was not only scenic and serene, it was well-manicured, challenging and provided a truly superb golf experience. As for the golf course staff, I found them eager to help and very friendly. I’ll be back at Big Canoe this summer, anxious to explore the remainder of the course, as well as treat my wife to dinner at the brand new clubhouse!

I took golf as a PE class once, so that’s pretty much my whole experience with the game, but that review almost convinced me that I need to go buy a set of clubs.

Darren, it is obvious that you have a flair for writing! Your heavenly description of the golf course makes me want to get out there and soak it all up! Even as a non-golfer I can appreciate everything you said!

Hi Valerie!
Not sure how I missed your question, so I apologize for the late reply. My answer is that the clubhouse “should be open this summer.” I truly hope it is ready by June, but it would not surprise me to see it bumped into July. It is one heck of a clubhouse, and when we get more info, we’ll be posting a blog about it.
