Big Canoe says Goodbye to Summer, Hello to Fall!!
By Karin Elliott | August 22, 2008
Seems like Hurricane Faye is blowing the summer away. The breeze here has been steady for a few days and is now starting to calm down. I was working with some clients today and we went up to Ridgeview where we saw a lot of broken limbs and leaf debris. The Ridgeview owners are probably jumping for joy over the “free vista pruning”!! I’m enjoying the lower temperatures and even the swimmers at the Wildcat pool were cold. The leaves have started to turn a little bit. Even though it’s early in the season the sour woods were showing some bright red leaves. The temperatures have been seasonably low with a high today of about 80 and lows in the 60’s! Not quite cool enough for a fire but it is pleasant to see the change. Fall, my favorite season is on it’s way early and I can feel it in my bones!!!
The big holiday weekend is coming up and although things have been quiet here as far as entertainment goes I am hearing about a lot of upcoming parties for Labor Day Weekend. A lot of my friends and neighbors will be having parties and barbecuing at the pool for most of the weekend. We are excited because Dan and I will be celebrating our 15th anniversary!!! Speaking of marriage, there are 3 weddings up here on Labor Day so prepare for some “traffic” that doesn’t have antlers or feathers!!! From what I hear there are no more rentals available! We thought about renting out the basement (he he!) but the whole idea about coming to Big Canoe is the peace and tranquility of the mountains, NOT the scampering dogs and energetic kids. The pools will remain open after Labor Day weekend but the lifeguards will no longer be on duty.
Along with the summer/fall transition I have seen a big change in the Big Canoe real estate market! Several homes have gone under contract this month and a steady flow of lookers has restored my confidence in this less than ideal market. The people I have been working with are mainly from the metro Atlanta area, but there are others from Alabama, Florida, and a few from up north looking to escape before the snow starts to fall. Half of the homes that are under contract are weekenders and the rest are full timers.
Keep in mind if you are planning on taking a fall weekend to come up and explore Big Canoe, you will need to start booking now. Check on my vacation rental site. I have a few homes that I haven’t put up yet so if you don’t find what you want then give me a call 770-655-4303. The weekends go quickly especially during the apple/pumpkin rush. Apple season starts in September and ends around mid November. You are free to publish any pictures you find of me eating fried apple pies this season because I am determined to make it through this apple season with some self control. If you catch me eating one then it means I physically WALKED to Ellijay! I’ll start posting upcoming festivals so you can mark your calendars. The Georgia Marble Festival is a fun one to see along with the Bluegrass Festival, and Apple Festival in Ellijay.
While things are still quiet and peaceful I plan to sneak over to the Farmers Market in Jasper tomorrow morning with the kids and the camera. Feel free to join me!

Keli and I can’t wait to see our first Big Canoe fall! I imagine we will be getting even busier at the Clubhouse too.
The Sunset Veranda outside of the Black Bear Pub has been a hit since we opened. I’m sure that, as the leaves begin to change colors and as the weather cools, we will see more and more people coming to see the view and watch the sun set across Lake Sconti.
Personally, I hope to do more hiking and fishing through the fall. Keli and I have enjoyed our walks so far. We are looking forward to the cooler weather and seeing the leaves change up close and personal on the trails.
Maybe we can get Dan, you and the kids away from your busy schedules for a few hours soon and take a walk with us.
We look forward to the festival info. you will be sending.
Hope to see you all soon.
