Big Canoe Community Involvement
By kve | January 26, 2008
Big Canoe residents do make a difference through various community projects. There are a number of ways that many Big Canoers are making a difference outside the gates. I plan to mention a few but understand that there ate many, many more ways to get involved. The social aspect of Big Canoe and the tremendous spirit of community is a big part of what makes Big Canoe such a wonderful place to live.
One of the most popular community projects is dear to my heart, the Big Canoe Animal Rescue. Dozens of pups and wayward dogs have been successfully treated and rehabilitated through the kind hearted volunteers of BCAR. Many of these animals are fostered through Big Canoe residents who teach and train these dogs how to co-exist with their human families. Joyce Chura runs the whole operation and makes sure that all pups and dogs are treated with shots, dewormers, and spay/neutering. Community volunteers then go out to local adoption round-ups. Big Canoe also holds monthly adoptions and follows up through articles in the Smoke Signals. Thank You BCAR!!! www.petfinder.com/shelters/bcdogs.html
Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center is a facility that provides uninsured Pickens County residents with medical care. For more information please click on their website: http://www.goodsamhwc.org/volunteers.asp
Tate Elementary School volunteers help run the PTO and provide profitable fundraisers for this historical elementary school. Many of the Big Canoe Mom’s are often seen in tutoring programs, school beautification, mentor programs, or just helping to make the day a little brighter by volunteering to do an activity in their child’s classroom.
Amicalola Falls State Park- Several Big Canoe Residents are frequently seen vounteering in this beautiful state park located only 20 minutes from Big Canoe. Whether it is planting a garden, working in the Nature Center, or simply providing information to a visitor, Big Canoe is a huge part of this park’s hospitality. http://www.gastateparks.org/info/amicalola/
Once again there are so many organizations that I have not mentioned but if you need a volunteer, Big Canoe has them!!!
