Bargain Barn in Jasper - Something for Everyone

By Karin Elliott | April 10, 2008

Here’s a true story that has given me one more reason not to go back into the suburbs:

My son just started soccer in Big Canoe, and he needed to get a pair of cleats. I had a crazy busy day planned and simply could not fit a trip to Walmart into my schedule. Out of the fog in my congested mind I faintly remembered a building across 515 from Ingles in Jasper. It was called the Bargain Barn and I’ve heard some friends mention it before. I decided to let my fingers do the walking and called the old Bargain Barn to see if they had cleats. The friendly gal who answered the phone said that they did indeed have kids cleats for soccer and baseball too. She also told me that they were 30% off because they were discontinuing their athletic department. I hopped in my car faster than you can say GOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL and headed over there for some cleats. What I found behind the doors will astound all who dare to read further.

As a somewhat sophisticated shopper I admit that I was less than enthused about heading over to a place called the Bargain Barn! The front entrance had a giant grizzly bear, some cute log furniture, and a sign that read something to the effect of “NO broad heads or loaded firearms”. Then something strange in me started tingling. My senses were suddenly aroused, and the smell was oh so familiar. Suddenly my head jerked to the right and it all came into focus: SHOES, Shoes, and more shoes! I immediately ran to the football field sized shoe department but was blocked by a corral fence. Jumping it would land me in some trouble so I found my way in the socially acceptable way, the entrance. The shoes ranged from flip flops to snow boots, hikers to cleats and all the CROCS you can shake a stick at!!!! My heart was palpitating and I knew I had found heaven in Jasper, GA. The most uplifting moment was seeing the amazingly low prices!! Even my husband, who HATES shopping enjoyed hunting for shoes.

After I experienced Nirvana in the shoe department I wandered around to see what else the Bargain Barn had to offer. I found a whole department dedicated to Harley Davidson, plenty of guns & ammo, bows and arrows, fishing and camping gear, sporting goods, and a lot of clothing devoted to the outdoors and being comfortable.   The store reminded me a lot of the Bass Pro Shop although on a smaller scale and with better prices.  My advice to anyone stuck in Big Canoe or Jasper during a rainy day is to stop by the Bargain Barn! I challenge you to come out empty handed.
