Another Round of Winter Weather in Big Canoe
By djelliott999 | February 27, 2008
Late Winter / Early Spring weather is always interesting in North Georgia. We woke yesterday morning to some pretty strong thunderstorms rolling through the mountains. Further South in the metro Atlanta area, some areas even sustained some damage from the high winds during the storms. All of this loud weather was followed by a strong cold front that brought some very cold weather and about an inch of snow to our mountain community here in Big Canoe. We’re getting quite a bit of winter weather this year, and the natural beauty of Big Canoe combined with this abundance of winter weather makes Big Canoe the perfect poster child for beautiful winter weather in the North Georgia mountains.
While the roads were covered with snow temporarily, the Big Canoe road crews did a great job of de-icing them and putting down gravel for added traction. Winter weather up here is actually a pretty good deal. Last night and this morning, we were able to enjoy the peaceful beauty of the snow falling, the kids got to make snow angels and go sledding, and then everything clears up within 24 hours.
What’s ironic is that I answered a question on another real estate web site regarding how far North you have to go from Atlanta before you get to have any real chance for winter weather. My response was that it’s not just how far North you go, but elevation is probably even more important. Our elevations here in Big Canoe exceed 3200 feet which means that these areas often see considerably lower year round temps as well as a much greater chance to see winter weather.

3 snow events this year - not too bad. We had one minor one here in Athens and I was in south GA. Some hope for the middle of next week, guess we’ll see.
