Snow Headed for Big Canoe?
By djelliott999 | January 16, 2008
Our family loves winter weather here in the North Georgia mountain community of Big Canoe. All day long we have been monitoring the weather service, and as of 4:52 PM, the weather service has issued a “Winter Storm Warning” for Jasper, Ga (which includes Big Canoe). The prediction is for snow accumulations up to 3 inches. We shall see! I’ll be updating this throughout the evening and tomorrow morning.
- 5:00 PM - The snow has started falling at a pretty clip…and it is sticking. Nothing on the news yet about Pickens County or Dawson schools yet. I wonder what it looks like up on Sanderlin Mountain which above 3000 feet in elevation.
- 7:00 PM - The snow continues to fall here in Big Canoe. As of 7:00 PM, we have about an inch on the ground so far. The streets are still clear.
- 8:00 PM - Still snowing, and the streets and front yard are covered by about 1.5 inches of snow. The streets are really slick, and I would be surprised if Pickens and Dawson did not close schools for tomorrow. Currently, the temperature is hovering around 28 degrees.
- 9:00 PM - More snow in Big Canoe. Temperature still near 28 degrees, and the wind is really whipping the snow up. Every so often, we have a big gust that blows the snow of the roof resulting in a busrt of powdery snow backlit by our flood lights. While Big Canoe gets several nice dustings of snow every year, this snow fall is really pretty.
