What To Do on a Rainy Sunday in Big Canoe? Blueberry Picking!

Clouds and Mist Settle in Over Lake Petit in Big Canoe
Today started out with heavy clouds over the North Georgia mountains, and buckets of rain falling from the sky. Not exactly the kind of day where it’s easy to find something fun to do outdoors, but that’s exactly what we did - we went blueberry picking. After a quick breakfast at the local Huddle House, the rain had let up some, so we headed out to fill our buckets with blueberries.

Tally Mountain Farm was our destination (about 30 minutes from the gates of Big Canoe). Tally Mountain Farm is owned by Randy and Connie Tudor, and for about 1 month every summer, the blueberries reach their peak ripeness, and the public is invited to come out to pick blueberries. The price is $7.00 a gallon. Try to beat that price in the store - not to mention the freshness and taste!

Blueberries Ready to Be Picked!
Even with the off and on showers and heavy fog, our family had a blast picking the blueberries. The rows of blueberry bushes and nearby trees were shrouded in mist, and it really was beautiful. The mist also kept us nice and cool. Be aware of the yellow-jackets that enjoy the ripe berries as much as we do! They generally don’t have much interest in us, but if you step on one, they will let you know!
I’d also like to mention that Randy is a Master Gardener here in Pickens County. The Master Gardeners here in Pickens are under the wing of the University of Georgia and work under the direction of the county extension office. My mother, Pam Elliott, is a Master Gardener as well, and she was the one that tipped us off about this local jewel.
After visiting Tally Mountain Farm, it’s obvious why people like Randy Tudor have the title Master Gardener. His knowledge, skill, and dedication is evident on everything from the lush rows of blueberries to the beautiful rock garden and pond next to his home. Randy also has considerable expertise with beekeeping. I’d like to thank Randy and Connie for their hospitality during our visit. I don’t think they have a website, but the owners have asked me to tell anyone interested to call them at (706) 692-9224 if they would like to go and pick the blueberries.
We intend to go back later this week and stock up for more pies.

Just to let you know blueberries are at their peak. The bushes are full. It is amazing. In the last three days over 35 gallons have been picked.
