Oktoberfest / Octoberfest in Big Canoe!

On September 14, 2008, Karin Elliott wrote -

The good news is that I have one week where I get to jump around and tell the whole world I’m of German heritage while clanging steins of beer and singing with the oom-pah band. The bad news is that I have to spend the rest of the year to repent! Then St Patrick’s Day comes around and I don’t feel so bad any more. Yes, I’m truly German with a maiden name of Karin Friedling. Though I’ve never made it back to the Fatherland for an official Oktoberfest I always make sure I have somewhere to go where I can happily eat sausages, drink German beer, and frolic with friends. Big Canoe is my new headquarters for Oktoberfest. As the saying goes, “What happens in Big Canoe Stays in Big Canoe”, especially during Oktoberfest.

Big Canoe will host Oktoberfest here at the dam on Saturday, October 11th. There will be plenty of vendors selling just about everything from jewelry, to art, and even alpaca sweaters (nicely priced, I might add). The food will be authentic German cuisine and the Warsteiner truck will be unloading the kegs all day. Shuttles will be running from the Wildcat parking lot for those who choose not to drive. There will be a live lederhosen clad oom-pah band  all day and they will keep you very entertained. The kids have just as much fun as the adults with the hula-hoop contests and German chicken dances.

One very important thing to keep in mind is that you may want to buy tickets beforehand if possible  for all food and beer. The food and drink vendors will not take cash. You can buy the tickets for $1 per ticket at the Fitness Center from Monday to Friday until the 10th. They will be for sale at Oktoberfest, but why wait in line if you could be singing “Eins, Zwei, Zuffa” with the band?

I will have some very fun clients in town that weekend and you can bet your last Oktoberfest ticket that you’ll find us there absorbing this very important Big Canoe cultural event. Please feel free to join us. Call me if you want to come to Oktoberfest and I’ll be happy to get you in!

~Karin

PS Big canoe’s next big cultural event is Trunk-or-Treat and I have been asked to help head up the Trail of Terror! This truly is an honor and I hope to live up to the Trails of the past. Last year’s Chainsaw Camping Trip theme was an all time thriller that will be hard to top. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

    Hi Karin and Dan
We are sorry to miss Oktoberfest this year! It sounds like so much fun. If you know of anyone who needs a little house to rent for the festivities, let me know. :)

Hey Karin . . . or should I say Freulein Friedling?!

Very interesting blog. Yeah, Margo and I always enjoy the great times, good music and delicious food while frollicking with friends at Big Canoe’s Octoberfests. We’ll look for you there and toast a cold one to you and Dan!

    All my best,

Great post. I can’t wait to get the festivities going! This is our first full-time year at Big Canoe and we can’t wait to partake in EVERY single event. We started with July 4 and it was awesome. Then went to the amphitheater for the 4th of July concert on July 5th and now we continue with Oktoberfest. As far as I am concerned, Big Canoe is the ONLY place to live. Wish more people knew about it so that I could stop feeling guilty that others are not living in heaven on earth too.

    Rhonda,
Love the enthusiasm, and I agree whole-heartedly!! I hope I get to meet you tomorrow!
    Very Sincerely,
    Karin
