Big Canoe Book and Writers’ Groups
By djelliott999 | March 5, 2008
There are more than sixty clubs, activity groups, and volunteer organizations in Big Canoe. Book and writers groups are among the many and varied clubs and groups that help make living in Big Canoe such a pleasure. My father belongs to the Big Canoe “No Name Book Club”. It’s called the “No Name Book Club” because the group of men that compose the club could not agree on a good name, so they just kept it simple and stuck to the basics, hence, “No Name Book Club”. This is sort of the same reason I own mostly khaki colored pants and navy blue shirts. One member gets to choose a book for the club to read, and they meet once a month and enjoy a glass or two of wine while discussing the book of choice. According to my father, the group is fairly dynamic with members having a wide range of interests, so accordingly the books cover a pretty wide range of topics. The lastest book for discussion was Jane Smiley’s A Thousand Acres.
Another popular group is the Big Canoe Writers’ Group. Bill Booth, one of the group’s members graciously provided this description of the Big Canoe Writers’ Group (along with more information regarding “No Name” club):
Members of the Big Canoe Writers’ Group have recently released at least five novels and expect to publish two or more collections of memoirs in the near future. They meet twice monthly to critique original work submitted by associates. A recently formed men’s book group meets once a month to review and discuss selected works. Their guideline for book choice is “anything goes”, but works discussed so far have been along the lines of biographies, political and historical events, and philosophical tomes. Because of the “open forum” discussion format of these groups, membership requires a commitment to regular participation and may be restricted by number.
Living in Big Canoe is not just about enjoying the beautiful scenery provided by the North Georgia mountains. The active and diverse community here provides clubs and groups for people of all ages and interests. Whether your interest is music, writing, books, fishing, quilting, knitting, you name it…there is most likely a group of likeminded folks that would be happy to have you join them.
