Big Canoe® Community

North Georgia's Big Canoe is a gated community located in the foothills of North Georgia's Appalachian Mountains. Development of Big Canoe began in the 1970's as a location for weekend getaways and retirees. Since then, Big Canoe has grown into a mountain community covering approximately 8000 acres.
The topography of Big Canoe includes 7 mountain peaks with elevations up to 3200 feet, three gorgeous lakes, many cold water streams, and beautiful woodlands which act as home to the abundant wildlife. The climate in Big Canoe varies with the topography with our overall year round temperature slightly cooler than the Atlanta metro area. Some of Big Canoe's higher mountain peaks also receive a few beautiful snowfalls every year.
Big Canoe is only 60 miles North of the metro Atlanta suburbs, and enjoys easy access from both Georgia 400 as well as I-75. Big Canoe is also approximately 70 miles from Chattanooga, Tennessee. This places Big Canoe within an easy drive from either the Atlanta airport or from Chattanooga. Big Canoe is nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and it is hard to believe that this much natural beauty is within an hour's drive of metro Atlanta.

Big Canoe Activities and Amenities
Big Canoe offers an incredible variety of amenities. The 27 hole Joe Lee designed golf course is one of the best in the Southeast, and the mountain vistas decorated with autumn foliage is simply stunning and makes for a golf outing you won't soon forget! Big Canoe's expansive fitness center surpasses the quality of most in-town fitness centers. Inside this state of the art facility, you will find exercise and weight equipment, an indoor pool, as well as racquet ball and tennis courts. More personal services and classes are offered as well such as yoga, Pilates, personal trainers, and massage.
Big Canoe also features several gorgeous clear water lakes: Lake Petit, Lake Sconti, and Lake Disharoon. Lake Disharoon offers swimming at the sandy beach as well as a swim club. A large waterslide connects Lake Disharoon to Lake Sconti and is a summertime favorite! Canoing and boating is also available on Lakes Sconti and Petit. All three lakes are stocked on a regular basis, and are home to some of the largest trout you will ever catch!
Miles of hiking trails weave throughout Big Canoe's many streams and forests. Big Canoe is a wilderness area and is in close proximity to the Dawson Forest as well as Amicalola Falls. It is common to see deer and wild turkey on any of Big Canoe's trails, and there are also other points of interest such as the Prospecting Mounds, Bent Trees, the Jeep Trail, and even an old moonshine still!
Other amenities include the Wildcat Recreation area with baseball and soccer fields, basketball courts, and pavilion. The Wildcat pool offers both an adult pool and a children's pool complete with fun water features! There is also a play field located in the heart of Big Canoe that includes a large ball field, a playground, and multiple grills.
Big Canoe Wildlife

Big Canoe's expansive woodlands, lakes, and streams are host to a variety of North Georgia wildlife. The entire 8000 acres of Big Canoe has been designated as a wildlife sanctuary, and the miles of hiking trails provides a chance for residents to enjoy this natural beauty on a daily basis.
Deer and wild turkey are a common sight on both the walking/hiking trails as well as right in your own backyard! The wild turkeys really seem to enjoy it when a cool mist settles in over the mountain peaks, and to see these beautiful birds strutting single file through a misty forest setting is a fantastic experience.
